Checking the ring's 'end gap.' This needs to be filed
to proper spec on performance engines. This gap actually closes
as the engine heats up. Therefore, the hotter the engine's combustion
chamber is (note-NOT water temperature,) the more gap (at room
temperature) is needed. There are charts that give ring expansion
specs, for instance a turbocharged motor needs much more ring
end gap than a normally aspurated motor. On this 350 engine that
is bored .030, we will start with an oversize ring set (.035)
that will give us plenty to work with. Because of this ring expansion,
IMHO 'gapless rings' are just a sales gimmick and a waste of the
extra money that they cost.
